AUSTIN -- Yellow Cab s president announced Tuesday that a GoFundMe page has been established for the cab driver who was killed by Michael Holt at the Omni Hotel early Sunday morning.

The funds will go toward the family of the cab driver, Conrado Conrad Guadalupe Contreras, to help pay for funeral arrangement and other related expenses.

Ed Kargbo, Yellow Cab president, donated the first 250 to the GoFundMe page and said the company will match the first 2,500 raised.

A cab driver of 15 years, Contreras left behind his daughter, a grandson and his sisters.

Contreras daughter, Clarissa Lopez, sent KVUE a statement on Wednesday which said in part, I know in my heart that the day this occurred my father was trying to diffuse the situation and likely confront Mr. Holt. He was brave and feared no one except God.

About 30 friends, co-workers and family members gathered Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church to remember Conrado Conrad Guadalupe Contreras, the cab driver and U.S. Navy veteran who was shot and killed during the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown shooting earlier this month.

Friends and family members praised Contreras, 60, for his honesty, positive outlook and warmth toward others.

One time after the death of a co-worker, as fellow taxi driver Geoff Rohde recalled, some drivers were discussing whether they would attend all of the services or only go to a memorial event and skip the cemetery services. Contreras, Rohde said, cleared the argument right up, saying they had to go to the cemetery to pay respects.

Conrad was an example with his life, Rohde said. He had the ever-prevailing understanding of wrong and right, and he was going to be the one to stand up for the right thing to do because it was the right thing to do.

Contreras was born in Beeville, about an hour north of Corpus Christi. He served in the Navy and found a lifelong passion for traveling during that experience. Later, when he owned and operated his own taxi cab, Contreras kept a U.S. flag in the car at all times as a proud reminder of his military service.

He earned a bachelor s degree from Texas A M and two master s degrees from Sam Houston University, his family said. His friends and family at the memorial service remembered his love of learning. His sister, Carmela Contreras, read a poem he had written in Spanish during his college years.

His passion for education also affected his younger family members. Andy Montalvan, 19, only met Contreras a few times at family events, but said the warm and intelligent man left a very strong impression on him and made him want to pursue a higher education.

I always heard about how he picked up languages very quickly, it made me want to do that, too, said Montalvan, who learned to speak German as a boy. The guy was obscenely intelligent. It made him someone I looked up to.

Contreras was in the lobby of the Omni Austin Hotel early the morning of July 5 grabbing a cup of coffee and the Sunday newspapers, his morning routine when 35-year-old Michael Holt walked in with a rifle and opened fire. An officer shot and killed Holt a few minutes later.

Contreras family said they were grateful to the people of Austin for their support. Friar Florencio Rodriguez of Our Lady of Guadalupe asked the community to keep the family in its prayers as they grieved but also to be at peace because Contreras, a devout Catholic, was now with his maker.

His family lost a good man here on Earth, Rodriguez said. But they ve also gained an angel in heaven.
